An 18-year-old boy, originally from Manosque, appeared before the Alès court on 1 June for a drug dealing matter. This immediate hearing came barely ten days after a previous sentence in Avignon for identical offences.
On 28 May, law enforcement apprehended him in the Prés Saint-Jean district, an area known for drug trafficking. He was in possession of a bag containing 77 grammes of cannabis in resin form, 23 grammes of cocaine and a sum of 330 euros in cash. Police had previously observed several sales operations at that location.
Before the court, the defendant admitted the charges. He claimed he was engaged in this activity under pressure from a criminal organisation, in order to settle a debt related to products lost during his previous arrest. He expressed his desire to change his ways.
The prosecutor's representative, Quentin Larroque, highlighted the repetitive nature of his statements, almost identical to those made a few days earlier in the Vaucluse. The magistrate noted that the defendant was operating at a site recently marked by shootings. He made an ironic remark to the effect that incarceration could have spared him the worst.
The prosecution requested two years of imprisonment, continued detention and a measure barring him from the commune for five years. Karim Derbal, the civil party's lawyer, argued for a sentence adjustment measure with electronic monitoring, considering that the young man remained salvageable.
The magistrate presiding over the hearing, Cécile Baessa, ultimately gave one last opportunity. The convicted defendant will serve twelve months under electronic surveillance at his home, subject to strict conditions and a ban from entering the Gard department for a period of five years.
