A 28-year-old man working as a waiter was charged on 4 July in a case of terrorist criminal association with a view to crimes against persons. The investigation concerns an alleged plot to assault law enforcement officers.
During a search of his home in Essonne, investigators discovered political writings as well as guides explaining how to make improvised weapons, according to revelations from Le Monde confirmed by franceinfo.
The national counter-terrorism prosecutor's office (Pnat) is directing the investigation. After a deferred hearing, the suspect was released under judicial supervision, but the counter-terrorism judges filed an appeal against this decision the following Friday.
The suspect's lawyers, Helin Köse and Ambroise Vienet-Legué, refute any activist involvement. They maintain that their client never joined a radical organisation or subscribed to an extreme-left doctrine. His only participation in a public gathering dated back to 1 May. The defence team contends that counter-terrorism measures have no place in this case and that the charge applied represents an excessive interpretation.
