A 31-year-old French man has appeared in court, accused of the murder, rape and sexual assault of a two-year-old girl in Chertsey, Surrey.
Kevin Kerjean, born in the Central African Republic, was arrested at a flat complex on Pyrcroft Road after police were called to the scene at approximately 17:40 BST on Thursday, following reports concerning a person's safety.
Surrey Police stated that Kerjean had entered the United Kingdom legally and had obtained the right of residence. The Home Office confirmed that he had applied for European Union settled status in December 2020 and had been granted permission to remain in March 2021, with an extension until March 2031.
The police force described as "incorrect" rumours circulating online claiming that the incident had occurred in a multi-occupancy hostel for asylum seekers.
It is understood that the child was known to Kerjean, and police believe the incident occurred "within a family setting". Officers are not seeking anyone else in connection with the matter.
Kerjean was due to appear before Guildford Crown Court on Monday.
Bunches of flowers were laid at the entrance of Syward Place, a flat complex situated at the junction of Pyrcroft Road and Bell Bridge Road.
Chief Superintendent Jon Groenen described the case as a "tragic incident" and stated that teams were working to establish what had happened. A significant police presence remained on Pyrcroft Road in the days following the incident.
