A man attacked several people with a knife in central Clermont-Ferrand, in central France, before turning on a police officer who shot and arrested him, the France-Presse agency reported, citing police.
According to the prosecutor of the Republic of Clermont-Ferrand, Éric Serfass, the attacker is a 34-year-old Sudanese national previously convicted in the same city for "intolerance, rebellion, violence against police and death threats". He had also undergone psychiatric treatment, police told the AFP.
"The extent of the injuries sustained by the victims and the attacker" is still being determined, Mr Serfass indicated. According to initial information, the man, armed with a knife, attacked a police officer who was attempting to arrest him after he had already wounded several passers-by.
A police officer from the same unit "used his firearm against this individual, who was struck by a shot," the magistrate continued, adding: "At this stage, there is no evidence suggesting a terrorist motive."
The incident occurred in an area where demonstrations had taken place in May 2025. Residents are increasingly complaining of insecurity and urban violence, particularly linked to drug trafficking and alcohol consumption in public spaces.
