19-year-old girl prosecuted for abandoning her infant in a forest

Last Sunday, a newborn was discovered alive on the edge of the Nonnenbruch forest in Wittelsheim, in Haut-Rhin. Her mother, a young adult aged 19, has been charged with attempted murder of a minor under the age of fifteen.

A passer-by raised the alarm after encountering the young woman running as she exited the forest. She was holding a duvet and had traces of blood on her legs. On the spot, gendarmes located the child, naked, placed on a blanket. The umbilical cord was still wrapped around his neck.

During her police custody, the suspect explained that she had given birth to her child alone in her bedroom a few hours earlier. Nobody in her circle was aware of her pregnancy, not even the child's biological father.

She stated that she had acted under panic, whilst denying any intention to harm or abandon her child. The investigation remains open to establish the exact chronology of events.
