According to ouest-france.fr, in the night of Friday 11 September 2026, a group of 20 to 30 youths caused chaos in the Saint-Nicolas neighbourhood in Laval, in Mayenne. Rubbish containers and several vehicles were set on fire around 10 p.m., according to a statement issued on Saturday by the Mayenne prefecture. The Public Prosecutor, meanwhile, refers to around fifty individuals involved.
The Conforama store was particularly hard hit: its blue façade was largely destroyed by the flames. It was in front of this damaged shop that an 80-year-old resident, Gérard, stopped his bicycle the next morning. "Here we go again with the nonsense. Something like this just isn't possible," he said.
The damage is described as "significant" by local media: fireworks mortars fired, burnt-out cars and broken shop windows marked the night. The authorities have opened an investigation. According to MaVille.com, the prosecutor specified that those responsible faced "penalties of up to 10 years in prison".
A call for calm was issued by local officials in a context of persistent tension in the neighbourhood. Images of the arrest that allegedly sparked the unrest were also broadcast by the Courrier de la Mayenne.
