Violent disturbances shook two municipalities in the Nancy conurbation during the night of Monday 13 to Tuesday 14 July. In Laxou and Vandœuvre-lès-Nancy, groups of young people caused fires and attacked emergency services using improvised explosive devices.
The first troubles broke out around 10 p.m. on the Boulevard de l'Europe in Laxou, where four cars were reduced to ashes. The firefighters called to the scene were immediately targeted by projectiles and firework mortar fire. Police officers who arrived as reinforcements faced the same treatment. To repel the assailants, officers used tear gas, deploying around twenty grenades according to the Un1té 54 union.
Meanwhile, similar incidents were occurring in Vandœuvre-lès-Nancy, notably in the Vand'Est sector. A car was set on fire in this area and bins were set alight on public roads, near the Rue de Hollande and Rue de Gembloux. Once again, law enforcement had to resort to tear gas to disperse the troublemakers.
Following this tumultuous night, eleven individuals were taken into custody, eight of them in Laxou. The majority of those arrested are minors. Operations continued until 2 a.m.
Following these events, the authorities strengthened the security arrangements planned for the evening of 14 July, with eighty police officers mobilised to oversee the fireworks display and gatherings related to the football World Cup semi-final.
