A motorist drove into a group of people waiting near Caen railway station in north-western France on Wednesday evening. The incident left at least one dead and around ten injured, several seriously, according to local authorities.
According to local radio Ici, the driver reportedly deliberately targeted pedestrians waiting for a tram near the station. The Caen prosecutor told the station, based on initial information, that this was not a terrorist act.
According to French channel BFMTV, the incident was reportedly linked to a dispute that occurred in a neighbouring bar that same evening. A media source clarified that one of the participants in this altercation was the driver who hit the crowd.
A police source who spoke to news agency AFP clarified that the fugitive was arrested later around twenty kilometres from the scene. The prefect of Calvados, David Clavière, told radio Ici that the arrested man, aged 26, is of Russian origin. His record contained only traffic violations until then.
