A 37-year-old motorist injured four people by ploughing into participants of a climate march in Clermont-Ferrand on Saturday 26 September, according to cnews.fr. The driver, who tested positive for narcotics according to initial tests, was taken into custody immediately after the incident.
According to the Public Prosecutor of Clermont, Éric Serfass, the man was "clearly impatient with the traffic slowdown" and attempted to "force his way through despite the presence of very many pedestrians walking peacefully", around 11am. The public prosecutor's office clarified that there is "no notion of terrorism" in this matter.
The four victims sustained only minor injuries. Seventeen firefighters and six fire engines were mobilised at the scene, according to France 3 Régions. The demonstration was interrupted following the incident.
The driver is being prosecuted for "violence with a weapon", the vehicle being considered the weapon in question, according to the public prosecutor's office.
