GIGN operation in Abymes: two officers shot, four arrests

Two gendarmes from the Pointe-à-Pitre branch of the Groupe d'intervention de la gendarmerie nationale (GIGN) were seriously wounded by gunfire on Saturday 10 October in the evening during a judicial police operation in Abymes, Guadeloupe. The incident occurred around 19:40 local time, according to a source close to the case cited by AFP.

One of the gendarmes was shot in the arm, the other was hit in the leg, with the femur probably broken, the same source clarified.

Ladepeche.fr reports that Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced the news in a message published on social network X on Sunday. "I offer them my full support and wish them a swift recovery. Attacking our law enforcement officers is intolerable," the minister wrote. Nuñez also indicated that four suspects were arrested following the operation, adding: "We will not back down in the face of organised crime and gang violence."

The investigation is ongoing. Further information is expected in the coming hours.
