Seven suspects were referred before the examining magistrate on 13 September following an armed brawl that occurred two days earlier outside Jardin d'Essai and Baimbridge secondary schools in Abymes, reports rci.fm.
The accused are facing charges of "aggravated violence in a group, with a weapon, with premeditation, in the vicinity of an educational establishment, carrying a weapon and ammunition of category B, and category A ammunition due to the presence of a magazine containing 30 rounds", according to a statement from the Prosecutor of the Republic. One of them is a minor.
The person who fired the shot was placed in provisional detention. The six other suspects were placed under judicial supervision.
A brawl at the school exit
The incident dates back to Friday 11 September, at midday break. As students were leaving Jardin d'Essai and Baimbridge secondary schools, a brawl broke out in the car park between secondary school students and other young men. One of them drew a firearm and fired a shot into the air.
National police services responded immediately to the scene. With the assistance of the Abymes municipal police, they identified and arrested six suspects in two vehicles. Two handguns and cartridges were found in these vehicles.
Three secondary school students were among the victims, struck with fists during the brawl. A seventh suspect was arrested during the weekend, following custody interviews.
