Man shot dead in his car in Baillif: 30th homicide of the year in Guadeloupe
A man born in 1991 was shot dead on Saturday around 3 a.m. in Baillif, bringing the number of homicides in Guadeloupe to 30 since January.

A man was found shot dead on Saturday, at around 3 a.m., inside his vehicle in Baillif, a municipality in Basse-Terre, according to 20minutes.fr. This is the thirtieth homicide recorded this year by the public prosecutors' offices of Basse-Terre and Pointe-à-Pitre, according to an AFP count.
The victim, born in 1991 and "known to the services", was at the wheel when he lost control of the vehicle under gunfire. The car struck several parked vehicles before coming to rest on its roof. "Local residents called the emergency services after hearing the sound of gunshots and the crash," the public prosecutor's office stated. According to Guadeloupe la 1re, the victim "had just been released from prison in mainland France", information that prosecutor Stéphanie Bazart did not confirm.
An investigation into "voluntary homicide" has been opened. "The investigation has been entrusted to the Pointe-à-Pitre Research Section, jointly with the Saint-Claude Research Brigade," the magistrate said.
Of the thirty homicides recorded since the beginning of the year, twenty-seven were committed with firearms. The majority of incidents occurred in the Pointe-à-Pitre area. Only one murder took place in Saint-Martin; all the others occurred in Guadeloupe. The prosecutor of Pointe-à-Pitre, Caroline Calbo, regularly denounces "an uninhibited use of firearms" on the territory.
This tragedy comes the day after another armed incident: on Friday, shots were fired into the air outside a secondary school in Abymes, on Grande-Terre, during a brawl. The incident prompted reactions from rector Gabriele Fioni and regional president Ary Chalus. Four young people were taken into custody, according to the Pointe-à-Pitre public prosecutor's office.
