Six guilty for the murder of a business owner in Gosier

Guadeloupe's juvenile assize court delivered its verdict on Friday evening in the case of the murder of a business owner, killed at his home in Gosier during the night of 22 to 23 September 2023. According to rci.fm, after five days of hearing and three hours of deliberation, all six defendants were found guilty. The sentences imposed range from 5 to 16 years in prison.

Two minors among the defendants

The six young men were tried for aggravated murder or complicity in aggravated murder. Two of them were minors at the time of the acts, which explains the jurisdiction of the juvenile assize court for this case.

Four convicted placed in immediate detention

Following the hearing, four of the convicted were taken directly into custody. They each received sentences of 10, 13, 15 and 16 years in custodial imprisonment.

The two other defendants left free after the verdict. One was sentenced to 5 years in prison, of which 4 years with a suspended sentence. The other, presented during proceedings as a possible instigator, was sentenced to 8 years in prison, with no detention order imposed at the hearing: he will therefore not be incarcerated immediately and must be summoned as part of the execution of his sentence.

Trial held under restricted publicity

The trial was held throughout the week before the juvenile assize court under restricted publicity, which prohibited journalists from attending proceedings. Ten solicitors were mobilised in this case: seven for the defence and three for the civil parties.

During the hearings, the general prosecutor issued a reminder regarding respect for the restrictions surrounding the publicity of the proceedings. Judicial follow-up could be given in this regard.
