Theft of million-euro cables in Paiania — 19 arrest warrants and arrests in Attica and Boeotia
Nineteen people have been arrested following coordinated police operations in areas of Attica and Boeotia in connection with thefts of copper cables from a construction site of a French company in Paiania. According to Newsit.gr, the value of the stolen goods exceeds €1 million, whilst the total length of cables that were removed is estimated at approximately 25 kilometres.
Members of the gang would enter the facilities during the night and remove large quantities of cables, taking advantage of conditions at the construction site. They would then load the stolen materials onto lorries that had also been obtained illegally and transport them to isolated locations.
There they burned the cables to remove the insulating sheath and extract the copper, which they subsequently channelled for sale. This practice enabled them to manage large quantities of metal, whilst simultaneously creating environmental hazards from burning the cables.
Police officers from Paiania Security mapped the gang's activities by utilising material from security cameras, as well as information that emerged from telephone taps. Based on these data, a total of 19 individuals were identified, and arrest warrants were issued against them.
According to available information, the identified individuals came from Albania, Greece, Bangladesh and Bulgaria. The police investigation concerns the thefts from the construction site and the trafficking of copper that was removed from the cables.
