Knife attack on Mandras police station — officer forced to open fire
On Friday afternoon, 4 September 2026, a 31-year-old man armed with a knife burst into Mandras Police Station and was seriously injured by gunfire from an officer. The incident is reported by Newsit.gr, citing two eyewitnesses who were at the station at the time for identity card renewal.
"Shoot, why don't you shoot?"
According to the witnesses, the incident began at the entrance to the station. The perpetrator initially threatened the officer on duty outside with a knife before pushing and breaking the door that the officer was holding shut with pressure. "We were at the office getting identity cards and suddenly we hear the officers shouting at each other 'if you have a weapon, take it out, bring it'", they reported.
With the door breaking, shards of glass injured one officer. The 31-year-old continued advancing with the knife, going up to the first floor. There he faced an officer who was aiming at him and repeatedly ordered him to drop the knife. The perpetrator refused to comply and kept coming closer. "The officer was aiming at him and he was telling him 'shoot, shoot, shoot, why don't you shoot?'", the witnesses described. "The officer was forced to shoot him", they concluded.
Serious injuries — hospitalisation at Thriassio
EKAB was called to the scene immediately. The 31-year-old was transferred to Thriassio Hospital, where he is hospitalised in serious condition with a penetrating wound to the chest and abdomen, awaiting surgery.
History of psychiatric hospitalisation and previous arrests
According to a report by Vassilis Lampropoulos on Live News, the act appears to have a retaliatory character, as the 31-year-old had been arrested in the past for domestic violence and had been taken to a psychiatric institution.
In April 2025 he had attempted suicide, a fact that led to his involuntary confinement at Dromokaitio. In October of the same year he was arrested again for insulting language and threatening a neighbour with an air rifle. In 2015, in an earlier domestic incident in Acharnes, he had threatened his partner and her mother with a knife, an incident that led at the time to his involuntary psychiatric examination. According to information, the perpetrator faces psychological problems.
Georgios Kalliakmanis, also on Live News, confirmed that the man had threatened the officer on duty outside the station with a knife before his attack.
