Conviction of 32-year-old woman in Volos for illegal weapon possession and violence against police officers

According to Newsit.gr, a 32-year-old woman was found on the afternoon of Thursday, 2 October 2026, outside the Church of Agios Nektarios in Nea Ionia, Volos, in possession of four knives and a chopper. She was arrested on the spot and taken to the summary court.

Before the Single-Member Misdemeanour Court of Volos on 5 October, the defendant stated that she needed the knives for her personal protection — and moreover to kill her sister. She justified her intention by saying that her sister was giving medication to their mother and had left her outside in the cold.

A friend of the 32-year-old, who testified as a witness, stated that the woman suffered from substance dependency, had serious psychological problems and had been treated at psychiatric clinics throughout the country.

The case was not limited to illegal weapon possession. During her detention at Volos Police Station, the defendant was found self-harming with a razor blade inside the holding cell. When police officers attempted a body search, she resisted, began shouting, moved spasmodically and struck the officers. Before the court, she stated that she had thrown the razor blade into the toilet and that when the officers asked her to hand it over, they beat her.

Her lawyer requested recognition of diminished responsibility, arguing that his client was not in a position to comprehend the nature of her actions, nor even the reason why she was carrying weapons.

The court rejected the claim of full lack of responsibility, but accepted that of diminished responsibility, taking into account the defendant's mental state. The 32-year-old was found guilty of carrying a weapon, illegal weapon possession, violence against officials and disobedience. She was sentenced to a total of 28 months in prison, of which she will serve six months immediately, whilst the remainder was suspended for three years.
