Former Thessaly regional governor referred to Special Court over Tempi incident: "The trial is political"
Former Thessaly regional governor Kostas Agorastos denies any responsibility for the alteration of the Tempi disaster site. The referral order to the Special Court is final.
Agorastos against referral: "The region had no operational role"
Former Thessaly regional governor Kostas Agorastos responded publicly on the afternoon of Tuesday, 29 September, to his referral to the Special Court regarding the case of alteration of the Tempi disaster site, as reported by In.gr.
Speaking outside the Thessaly Regional Administration building in Larissa, on the sidelines of a Regional Council meeting, Agorastos stated categorically: "The Thessaly region had no operational role nor any other role there, it had no authority whatsoever". He added that the region's role was "supportive" and concluded: "This trial is political for me and the Thessaly region should not have been involved".
These statements are consistent with what he had previously maintained during his defence before the Court of First Instance Investigative Judge. According to reports, he had stated at that time that he had "no connection to the dumping", shifting responsibility to other bodies.
The senior judges, having examined the entirety of the case file and evaluated the evidence, determined — according to reliable sources — that the offence of breach of duty is substantiated, which is classified as a misdemeanour.
The referral order is by law final, a fact which precludes the exercise of any legal remedy. Consequently, following its publication and the drawing of lots of the senior judges who will constitute the Special Court under Article 86 of the Constitution, the determination of the trial is considered inevitable.
