According to Newsit.gr, the investigation into the double murder in Aigio has taken on a new dimension following the discovery of 16 boxes of pharmaceutical preparations inside the house — none of which contained the depressant substance found in the body of the 65-year-old Italian defendant.
Twelve of the preparations were found in the 54-year-old woman's bedroom and four others in a drawer in the house. The authorities are attempting to establish where the specific substance came from, when it was administered, and whether its administration was connected to events on the night of the crime.
The sister of the 54-year-old states that neither she nor her son were undergoing treatment with sedatives or psychiatric medication, and that neither of the two had been hospitalised for psychiatric reasons. She describes the 65-year-old as a calm person, whilst noting that her sister had only spoken to her about occasional cannabis use — and that at some point she had planted a cannabis plant in a pot in the house.
The defendant's lawyers invoke the results of toxicological examinations, arguing that their client was in a state of intense sedation on the night of the double murder and was not aware of what was happening.
Meanwhile, at the centre of the investigation is also the robotic electric vacuum cleaner in the house. The authorities are examining whether its memory can reveal the last time it was switched on, a detail which may help to reconstruct the chronological sequence of events.
The 65-year-old has stated that he woke up at approximately 11 in the morning of the day the crime was discovered and then notified a friend of his before police forces arrived. A key piece of evidence against him remains the fact that security cameras recorded that no one other than the residents entered the house on the night of the double murder — combined with the wounds on the 54-year-old woman's back.
The authorities await new developments, whilst the case, one of the most high-profile of recent months, remains open with unanswered questions continuing to mount.
