As part of the investigation into the murder of a 54-year-old woman and her 26-year-old son in an area of Aigion, the prosecuting authorities are examining whether biological material from someone other than the two victims is present on the weapon that was used.
The 65-year-old partner of the woman, an Italian national, remains the principal suspect in the case and is being held at Korydallos prison. To date, it has not been clearly established whether another person also participated in the act.
Police spokeswoman Konstantia Dimoglídou emphasised in statements to television station ERT that the findings do not yet provide a complete picture. As she stated, the examination of additional evidence is pending, which is why a definitive conclusion cannot be drawn.
According to the results of laboratory analyses, DNA from both victims has been identified at different points on the weapon. Meanwhile, checks are being carried out for any possible presence of genetic material from a third person. Forensic pathologist Dimítris Galéntéris explained that in wooden parts of weapons, traces are retained for several months, whilst in metallic parts for a period of up to twelve months.
The possible existence of DNA from a third person does not necessarily mean that this person was involved in the crime. The material could have come from someone who had handled the weapon in the past, before the night of the murder.
Particular significance is being given to the statements of the friend whom the Italian defendant called and who arrived at the scene before the authorities, as well as those of the victims' relatives. This particular witness has already described what he witnessed and may be called again for supplementary testimony.
The investigations are continuing at an undiminished pace. The defendant's lawyer has been given access to the case file. The case remains open, with the authorities investigating every possible scenario.
