Amaliada: Three gas cylinders explode at apartment building entrance
An explosion of an incendiary device occurred in the early hours of Saturday at the entrance of an apartment building on 25th March Street in Amaliada, causing alarm amongst residents in the Evangelistria district.
The perpetrators had placed three gas cylinders together with a canister containing flammable liquid. The detonation of the device created a loud blast and caused a fire that burned the building's entrance. Windows shattered both in the specific building and in neighbouring properties.
According to Newsit reporting, residents who spoke to ilialive.gr stated that they had never experienced a similar incident. Initially they believed it was a traffic accident, as they happen frequently on the adjacent road. However, the sight of flames at the building entrance and the scene reminiscent of a bombed-out landscape shocked them.
Police officers who arrived at the scene began an investigation to identify those responsible. A priority is checking for the existence of security cameras that may have recorded the perpetrators. In parallel, authorities are examining whether the incident is connected to other recent events in the area, investigating the possibility that the attack constitutes an act of retaliation.
The attack in Amaliada causes concern, as it comes just days after a similar attack on the home of Aphrodite Nestor, where the explosion cost the life of her mother. Incidents involving gas cylinders have become a frequent phenomenon, with over 150 arrests having been made in the last three years across the country.
Fortunately, in the case of Amaliada there were no injuries, aside from significant material damage.
