Athens Mixed Jury Court has imposed suspended prison sentences on two police officers found guilty of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman at Homonia Police Station in 2022.

Two police officers who were serving in central Athens were found guilty by the Mixed Jury Court of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman within Homonia police station in 2022. The first was sentenced to four years and five months imprisonment, whilst the second received four years. Both sentences are suspended, a fact that allows the convicted men to remain outside a correctional facility until trial in second instance.
The judges recognised in the aforementioned men the mitigating circumstance concerning lawful previous conduct. The initial charge of gang rape was converted to an act committed jointly without the victim's consent, with the decision taken by majority vote.
One of the two was additionally sentenced for unlawful video recording of the incident. According to evidence in the case file, he had placed a hidden camera inside a small bag, recording his actions. For the same reason, he was also convicted of violating personal data protection legislation.
The case had provoked strong public reaction when it came to light, given that the incident took place within a police station. The decision to suspend the sentences means that the two men are not being sent to prison at present.
