ATM explosion in Martino: gang seized €43,420 using stolen crane lorry

According to Newsit.gr, with a stolen crane lorry, improvised explosive device and covered faces, the gang that blew up an ATM in Martino, Phthiotis in December 2023 struck, seizing €43,420.
The dismantling of the group took place in the afternoon of Monday, 14 September 2026, as part of an organised police operation in areas of Attica and Corinthia. Two men, aged 44 and 29, were arrested, who face charges in connection with a series of offences.
The group had been formed at the end of 2023 and, according to the authorities' investigation, had targeted vehicles and bank ATMs inside supermarkets in provincial areas.
How the robbery was carried out
In December 2023, the perpetrators arrived at the ATM armed and with their faces covered. They placed an explosive device and caused an explosion to gain access to the safe. They then used a wire rope and a stolen crane lorry — which they had stolen earlier from the same area — to extract the safe containing €43,420. They loaded it into a second stolen van-type vehicle and fled.
Video evidence that captured the gang's operation formed part of the evidence. The authorities managed to reconstruct the method of operation and link the accused to the attack.
What was found in the searches
During searches at the homes of the two arrested men, police seized a pistol with seven rounds, two radios, four nautical flares, a folding knife and two car computers.
Tools for forging vehicle documents were also found, metal dies for stamping chassis numbers, numerous mobile phones and €750 in cash. A vehicle was seized as a means of committing criminal acts.
The same investigation revealed alleged involvement of the two men in two further vehicle thefts from October to December 2023 in Kifissia and Metamorfosi.
The two arrested men, who according to police have occupied the attention of the authorities in the past, were taken to the competent prosecuting authority.
