A 16-year-old from Sudan was caught by the Coast Guard as the operator who illegally transported 38 people from Libya to Greece. The passengers had paid thousands of dollars for the crossing.

Forty-five nautical miles south-west of Kaloi Liménes, Coast Guard personnel detected a vessel with 38 foreign men in distress at sea. They were picked up by an open-ocean vessel and transferred to the port of Rethymno.
During the preliminary investigation conducted by the local Port Authority, a 16-year-old from Sudan was identified as the person who organised the voyage. The teenager is accused of illegal entry into the country, facilitating illegal immigration, and endangering the others.
The rescued migrants stated that they departed from the Tobruk area of Libya in early June 15th. Each of them had paid 2,500 US dollars to reach Greece.
