On Friday 18 September, 13 years will have passed since the murder of anti-fascist musician and metalworker Pavlos Fyssas in Keratsini, carried out by the assault squad of the Nazi criminal organisation Golden Dawn. According to 902.gr, on the same day at 5:30 p.m. a rally will be held at the Fyssas memorial on P. Fyssas Street 60 in Keratsini, followed by a march towards the Kokkinya blockade.
A mass call for participation is being made by the Piraeus Workers' Centre, PAME, as well as a series of labour unions and mass organisations.
"We do not forget, we do not forgive"
The Piraeus Workers' Centre emphasises that "we do not forget, we do not forgive, we continue the struggle against fascism and the system that generates it, nurtures it and exploits it". In its statement it points out that the murder of Fyssas, a few days after an organised attack by Golden Dawners on PAME unionists in Perama, revealed "the real role of the Nazi criminal gang" as "the long arm of the system, in service of capital".
The Workers' Centre characterises the attempt at political rehabilitation and over-promotion by various media of "Nazi criminal Ilias Kasidiaris on the occasion of his release from prison" as "anything but coincidental". It states unequivocally: "The organised labour and popular movement will send them where they belong. Do not dare set foot in Piraeus and its neighbourhoods. We will not allow the Nazis to raise their heads again".
PAME on memory and organisation
Calling unions, workers and youth of Attica to mass participation, PAME stresses that it "keeps alive the memory and conclusions from the criminal actions of the Nazi Golden Dawn". It takes on, according to its statement, "the responsibility to make younger workers aware of them, to make them understood so as to strengthen organisation in unions and the struggle against the system of exploitation".
PAME characterises fascism as "the long arm of the capitalists", which "is generated by the capitalist system itself" and is exploited "as a reserve to strike at workers, unionists, migrants, youth". Regarding Kasidiaris's release and his promotion by media as a "political figure and party leader", PAME states: "The same state that declares strikes illegal opens the door to convicted Nazis to support the interests of business conglomerates".
Metalworkers: "The attack in Perama was premeditated"
In a joint statement, the Metal Workers' Union of Attica and the Shipbuilders and Woodworkers' Union recall that six days before Fyssas's murder, on the night of 12 September 2013, "an organised assault squad of Golden Dawn set up a murderous ambush in Perama against communists, pioneering workers and PAME unionists, members and officials of the Metal Workers' Union". Dozens of Golden Dawners, "organised and armed with clubs, cudgels and crowbars, attacked their colleagues". The attack, they emphasise, "was not coincidental, it was not an incident — it was organised and premeditated against the class labour movement".
The two unions also refer to more recent incidents: an attack on the president of the Shipbuilders and Woodworkers' Union in January and threats in April against a member of the Administrative Council of the Metal Workers' Union. "We know very well from our own experience that when the organised demands of workers strengthen", they stress, the response of fascist forces intensifies.
"Workers in the Shipyard and Ship-Repair Zone have one more reason to remember, to draw conclusions and to pass them on especially to our younger colleagues", they conclude in their statement.
