Con artists posing as 'technicians' led elderly woman to hotel and ransacked her house

An 83-year-old woman in Nea Smyrni lost €200,000 through an organised fraud, according to reports by in.gr.

The perpetrators presented themselves as employees of DEDDIE and cited a fault in the electricity network. Using this pretext, they persuaded the elderly woman to withdraw €200,000 from a bank safe deposit box and hand it over to them.

Subsequently, as revealed by police correspondent for the newspapers "TO VIMA" and "TA NEA" Vasilis Lampropoulos, they took her to a hotel in central Athens. They promised to cover her accommodation expenses for as many days as would allegedly be needed to repair the fault.

During her absence, police sources reported that the perpetrators returned to Nea Smyrni and burgled her house.

The 83-year-old woman's relatives, who could not locate her, notified the authorities. Through the location signal from her mobile phone, the woman was located at the hotel in central Athens.
