The European Public Prosecutor has uncovered a large-scale VAT carousel fraud that caused damage of €71 million to public funds. Greek companies are involved in the case, and investigative authorities conducted searches in Attica and Kastoria.
The criminal group used a network of shell traders to conceal the circulation of small electronic items within the European Union. Through complex transactions between ghost companies, the perpetrators avoided paying VAT.
During the authorities' operations, cryptocurrency worth €900,000 and digital assets worth €4.5 million were seized. The investigations focused on Attica and Kastoria, where the involved companies were identified.
The fraud scheme was based on the creation of fictional companies that appeared to distribute electronic products between EU member states, without however paying the corresponding tax.
