Fraud involving 'fake police officer' in Giannitsa: 90-year-old woman loses €26,400

A 90-year-old woman in Giannitsa, Pella fell victim to a fraudster using the well-known "fake police officer" scheme last August, losing €19,400 in cash and jewellery valued at €7,000. According to Dikastiko.gr, the Hellenic Police announced they had solved the case, identifying a 61-year-old man for involvement in the matter.
According to the Police, the perpetrators set up a double trap for the victim. In the first phase, an unknown caller telephoned the elderly woman, threatened her and demanded money and jewellery. A short time later, a second accomplice presented himself over the phone as a police officer, promising to help her cooperate with the authorities to arrest the alleged perpetrators.
Under the guidance of the alleged police officer, the 90-year-old placed the cash and valuable items at a location indicated to her. A 61-year-old man collected them from there, playing the role of "collector".
The investigation by the Department of Prosecution and Investigation of Crimes in Pella is continuing with the aim of identifying the remaining accomplices and investigating their possible involvement in other similar cases.
