Fake online courses "from the University of Thessaly" trap citizens aged over 50

According to tanea.gr, fraudsters are circulating a post on social media that uses the name and logo of the University of Thessaly, promising 189 online courses for people aged 50 and over, starting from August 2026.

The post, originating from an unofficial Facebook page, includes a link through which interested parties are invited to view the alleged courses and receive certification upon completion. The fraudsters' aim is to extract personal and banking information from victims.

The University of Thessaly has issued an official statement, clarifying that the specific page and post "have no connection with the University of Thessaly" and have not been approved by any department, School or Faculty of the institution. "The post circulating on Facebook from an unofficial page and using the name and/or logo of the University of Thessaly is fraudulent," the institution states.

The University calls on citizens not to interact with the relevant post and to seek official updates exclusively from its official website and official Facebook page.

Those who have already entered details are urged to change their passwords immediately. In the event that banking details have been disclosed, the University recommends immediate contact with their bank and the Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate on 11188.
