Biolanda owner released – trial for five deceased workers

Konstantinos Tziortziotis, owner of the biscuit manufacturer Biolanda, has been out of prison since Tuesday afternoon after a request for the lifting of his pre-trial detention was accepted, according to In.gr.

According to trikalaenimerosi.gr, the businessman was released under the imposition of restrictive conditions, which will remain in force until the case is tried.

Tziortziotis had been in pre-trial detention since 18 February, when after lengthy testimony he was deemed to be in need of pre-trial detention by agreement of the investigating judge and prosecutor.

The case concerns the fatal explosion and subsequent fire at Biolanda's facilities in Trikala in the early morning of 26 January 2026, resulting in the deaths of five workers. The authorities' investigation focused on propane leakage and the safety conditions of the factory, whilst judicial investigation continues.

Investigations conducted following the accident revealed that there was extensive propane leakage throughout the factory premises. At the same time, there were allegations that management appeared dismissive of complaints from workers about odours they detected within the facilities.

Biolanda was founded in 2003 by Tziortziotis, with roots in family activity in the bakery sector in Trikala, and is one of the most recognisable Greek biscuit manufacturers. The tragedy of January shocked both the local community and the entire country.
