An 86-year-old woman in Kastri, Thesprotia fell victim to fraudsters who took the entirety of her savings, which amounted to more than €180,000.
The victim received a call on her landline telephone from a person who impersonated her financial adviser. The unknown man told her that the country was on the verge of adopting a new currency, citing the introduction of the euro in place of the drachma as an example. With this argument, he convinced her that she needed to immediately hand over the cash she had at home in order to exchange it.
The 86-year-old, believing that the procedure was legal, placed all her money in a bag, in accordance with the instructions she had been given. She then left the bag in the courtyard of her house, believing that some official would pass by to collect it.
The perpetrators managed to take the money without being noticed. The police authorities have been notified and are investigating the case in order to locate those responsible.
