In Pella, a 39-year-old man was taken into police custody following an attempted fraud against a 44-year-old police officer. The officer immediately recognised the scheme and alerted his colleagues at the Department for the Prosecution and Investigation of Crimes in the region.
The perpetrators used the classic fake accountant method. A woman, an accomplice of the arrested man, contacted the victim by telephone, claiming to work in the accounting department of his company. She asked him to collect all the cash and valuables he possessed so that she could declare them and help him avoid an alleged fine.
The 44-year-old, unbeknown to the fraudsters that they had targeted a police officer, immediately recognised the fraud. He subsequently coordinated with his colleagues to conduct an arrest operation. When the 39-year-old appeared to collect the money, the police officers immobilised him. The suspect attempted to flee on foot and resisted, pushing back against the officers.
The investigation revealed that the same man, together with his accomplice, had defrauded a 79-year-old elderly woman in Kilkis the previous week of 8,000 euros, using the exact same tactic. Furthermore, the suspect was using a stolen motorcycle from Attica with a forged licence plate.
There were already four outstanding convictions against the 39-year-old, with total sentences of ten years' imprisonment, 19 months' imprisonment, and a financial penalty of 51,500 euros.
