Arvanitis on new prosecution of EYP official: "The truth about Predator will not be buried"
SYRIZA MEP Kostas Arvanitis has commented on a new prosecution filed against an active official of Greece's intelligence service EYP over the Predator case, calling for a full investigation into the wiretapping network.

The Predator scandal "will not be buried", declares SYRIZA MEP Kostas Arvanitis, according to In.gr, following a new prosecution filed against an active official of the EYP intelligence service over the wiretappings.
Arvanitis, vice-president of the Left and member of the European Parliament's Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE), believes that the new prosecution "brings back the critical triple question that the Mitsotakis government has so furiously obscured for years": what was the full network of wiretappings, why was it set up, and how exactly did it operate.
"Proper criminal procedure demands that not only the actions of Dilyan, Bijou, Lavranou and Chamos be investigated, but also the possible involvement of persons unknown until now", emphasises the MEP, adding that "however much coordinated centres obstruct the revelation of the truth, so shall integrity demand honest and independent Justice".
Arvanitis rejects the approach that confines the case to individual responsibility. He stresses that "it is not possible for a scandal that touched journalists, high-ranking politicians, military officers, state officials, and the intelligence service itself to be treated as a matter concerning a few private individuals, detached from the political and state environment in which it developed".
With reference to the international dimension of the issue, the MEP notes that "Democracy is not protected by cover-up and silence, but by transparency and accountability, no matter how high the trails lead". He also recalls that the Predator software "has already been recognised at European level as a threat to the rule of law and fundamental rights".
