Argos: Municipal councillor resigns following mayor's statements about death of 20-year-old in police shooting
A doctor serving as a municipal councillor in the Argos-Mycenae municipality has stepped down from her position following public statements by the head of the local authority regarding the death of a young man from police bullets.
Anastasia Argyropoulou announced her decision to resign from office via the internet. In her statement, she noted that the views expressed by Ioannis Maltezos regarding the killing of 20-year-old Theodori by two police officers revealed a fundamental difference in their understanding of public duty and responsibility towards citizens.
The resigned councillor stressed that anyone holding public office should demonstrate institutional conduct, sensitivity, responsibility and care in what they say publicly, particularly when referring to incidents that affect social cohesion and shake the local community.
The mayor had openly sided with the two police officers who fired at the 20-year-old, whilst also attacking the victim's mother, arguing that she allowed her child to drive dangerously on the city's roads, putting the lives of innocent people at risk.
In a previous public statement, Maltezos had declared his full and sincere support for the police officers and their families, who, he said, are going through difficult times.
Argyropoulou thanked the mayor for the trust he showed her when he placed her in the position of Deputy Mayor of Administration, whilst clarifying that she remains at the disposal of the citizens.
