Two uniformed officers face charges of attempted murder with possible intent, following a night-time pursuit that resulted in a head wound to a 20-year-old with autism.

A 20-year-old man is hospitalised on a ventilator following shots fired by police officers during a pursuit in Argos. The two officers involved have been charged with attempted murder with possible intent.
The incident began in the early hours of Wednesday, 6 July 2022, when at 01:10 authorities were notified of a vehicle travelling at excessive speed on the provincial road Argos-Pyrgyela. Patrol cars near the railway station spotted the driver speeding and a pursuit began that lasted 35 minutes.
The vehicle crossed Pyrgyela and Argos, passed through the areas of Elliniko, Aerodrome, Stathaiika and Monastiraki, and came to a stop in a supermarket car park. The driver abandoned the vehicle, jumped a fence and ended up in a vegetated area.
According to what the pursuing officers claimed, they shouted at the young man to stop and fired warning shots into the air. At some point they found him on the ground and called the ambulance service.
The victim's mother, speaking to MEGA, revealed that her son has autism with a disability rating of 89 per cent. The family had recently moved from Athens. She emphasised that the young man has no peer group and struggles with communication.
The woman stated that her son had a previous arrest when objects such as brass knuckles, a baton and a police vehicle spotlight were found in a vehicle he was driving. That night, according to the mother, the young man had sneaked out to cool off and bathe. When police officers signalled him, he panicked due to a previous violent incident with a police officer and attempted to get away.
According to the mother, doctors removed two bullets, while three remain in the brain. "They killed him very brutally. Now his little body only functions with machines," she said. She also claimed that ammunition was used that is not permitted for use by the Police.
At least 13 shell casings were found at the shooting scene. A ballistics investigation is expected to clarify whether the shots were fired directly or upwards, as the pursuing officers claim.
The two officers are to be questioned, the first at 11:00 and the second at 12:00. They deny the charge of possible intent.
