Four officers from the Chania Security Directorate, headed by the service's director Giannis Sgouro, have taken legal action against former police officer Stavros Balaska. Their complaints concern public statements made by Balaska about how the authorities handled the murder case of Stavroula Leventaki, which took place on 19 June.
According to Newsbeast.gr, the police officers are accusing him of malicious defamation and continued insult, as well as spreading false information. In a document of 18 pages, made public by Flashnews.gr, the Security Directorate staff state that Balaska appeared on television programmes throughout the course of the investigation, when the woman was still missing.
The complainants argue that the former police officer publicly questioned their work, calling the service's handling of the case a "blunder". In their report they emphasise that the investigation was conducted with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality. Balaska, according to the document, repeated his allegations on a Cretan radio station, despite not having access to details of the investigation.
The officers stress that their service's actions were carefully planned and that Balaska's statements damage the reputation and credibility of Chania Security.
