Two men, one of whom is an active police officer, have been sentenced to four years and ten months for the attempted arson of a petrol station in Volos.

Two men were sentenced on Friday, 25 September 2026, to four years and ten months' imprisonment for the attempted arson of a petrol station in Volos, according to Newsit.gr. A fine of €1,200 was also imposed on each man.
One of the convicted men was a 32-year-old police officer serving in Athens who was placed on standby immediately after his arrest. The second was a 22-year-old student, also from Athens.
The two men were arrested in flagrante delicto in September 2023, at approximately 4 a.m., outside a petrol station on Larissa Avenue. They were inside a rented vehicle from which they had removed the registration plates.
During a search of the vehicle, police officers found a balaclava, flares, 80 litres of petrol in canisters, a crowbar, a pry bar, a folding knife, two registration plates and a forged identity card. During a search of the 22-year-old's residence in Athens, a revolver was also found.
The charges faced by the two men included attempted arson with intent, illegal possession of incendiary materials, possession of flares, forgery, illegal possession of firearms and carrying firearms. During the preliminary investigation, the two accused reportedly gave contradictory explanations for their presence at the location at that time.
The same petrol station had been the victim of arson earlier, in the early morning hours of 28 June 2023, when a security camera recorded an unknown perpetrator setting fire to the premises.
