Police officer entraps telephone fraud gang in Karpenissi

Two known fraudsters were arrested in Karpenissi after attempting to defraud an active police officer from the Security Service – only to find themselves facing their own "mentor". The incident is reported by Newsit.gr.

An associate of the two perpetrators called the police officer's landline, posing as an accountant. According to ERT News, under the pretext of registering and "securing" electronic devices, money and jewellery – ostensibly to avoid a fine via drone – he attempted to persuade the ELAS officer to hand them over to a specified location.

The police officer immediately realised it was a fraud and informed his service via his mobile phone. He then continued the telephone communication with the perpetrator, accepting the handover of money and jewellery at the entrance of his apartment building, thereby trapping his collaborators.

The two perpetrators arrived in their operational vehicle outside the apartment building. The passenger got out and entered the building with the aim of collecting the bag containing the valuables. There he was immobilised by Security Service officers, despite attempting to escape and smashing his mobile phone to conceal evidence. At the same time, the driver of the vehicle was also arrested.

The detainees and the vehicle were taken to the Police Directorate of Eurytania. A special hiding compartment was discovered in the vehicle's cabin. Beneath the floor mat behind the passenger seat were found a gold cat-shaped brooch and a pendant with a chain depicting the ancient Athenian owl – items linked to previous frauds.
