Police officer in Karpenissi trapped two members of telephone fraud ring
An active police officer with Karpenissi Security neutralised two members of a telephone fraud ring after detecting an attempted deception and alerting his service.
Police officer "set a trap" for fraudsters who attempted to extract money and jewellery
Two members of a telephone fraud ring were arrested in Karpenissi after attempting to defraud an active police officer, according to ERT.
An accomplice of the ring telephoned the fixed line of a police officer with Karpenissi Security, posing as an accountant. He claimed that electronic devices, money and jewellery needed to be registered and insured to avoid a fine imposed by drone, attempting to persuade the officer to hand them over at a specific location.
The officer immediately recognised it was fraud. He alerted his service via mobile telephone and continued the telephone communication with the perpetrator, stating that he agreed to hand over money and jewellery at the entrance of his apartment building.
The two perpetrators, with criminal records for similar offences, arrived at the location with their vehicle. The passenger got out and entered the apartment building with the intention of collecting the bag with the valuables. Security police officers immobilised him on the spot, despite his attempt to flee — during which he broke his mobile telephone to conceal evidence. At the same time, the driver of the vehicle was also arrested.
The two arrested individuals were transferred to the Police Directorate of Evrytania. A special hiding place for concealing stolen goods was found in the car, whilst beneath the floor mat behind the passenger seat were found a gold cat-shaped brooch and a pendant with a chain depicting the ancient Athenian owl.
