The Mixed Jury Court acquitted two 20-year-olds who were accused of harbouring a criminal in connection with the murder of a 27-year-old man, the son of a major of the Greek Police, which was committed last April in Asirmatos park in Agios Dimitrios, Attica.
According to information from the court, the decision to acquit the two young men was made following a unanimous ruling by the judges. Tension in the courtroom was palpable during the announcement of the verdict.
At the same time, the judicial authorities decided to investigate one of the 20-year-olds for the offence of simple complicity in manslaughter, in contrast to the initial more serious charge.
The case had shocked the local community of the area, as the victim was murdered in a manner that caused considerable concern among residents. Police investigations had led to the arrest of multiple individuals, whilst the motive for the attack remained the subject of investigation.
The victim's family, who are part of the Greek Police force, followed the trial with particular anxiety. The court's decision opens a new phase in the judicial investigation of the case, as investigations to locate and arrest the perpetrator or perpetrators of the murder continue.
