New Democracy MP Dimitris Abramópoulos is at the centre of political controversy, as the case file concerning him has been submitted to Parliament. Belgian authorities have issued an arrest warrant for his alleged involvement in an NGO connected to the Qatargate scandal.
The document includes three charges and concerns his connection to the organisation "Fight Impunity" run by Antonio Panzeri. The former EU Migration Commissioner and current MP denies any involvement.
Mr Abramópoulos characterised the matter as "entirely baseless". He argued that his involvement was lawful and declared, whilst assuring that he would not invoke his parliamentary immunity. The European Commission clarified that it has not received a request to lift immunity.
In Parliament, government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis noted that the MP is "honoured" not to be seeking protection from immunity. From the opposition, SYRIZA and the Communist Party called for a full investigation into the case.
According to the timetable, the Ethics Committee will call Mr Abramópoulos within the coming week. The Plenary will decide by secret ballot on the lifting or maintenance of his immunity.
