Shipping Magnate Martinos: Deepfake Video on Social Media for Investment Fraud
Shipping magnate Athanasios Martinos has fallen victim to an online fraud scheme using artificial intelligence, according to a report by newmoney.gr. A manipulated video from an earlier interview with him circulated on social media on 10 September 2026.
The disputed material uses distorted and processed audio, which appears to encourage users to place money on a digital investment platform. A link to the platform is reported to have accompanied the video.
Martinos himself stated emphatically that the content "constitutes a fraudulent product and is completely false and misleading", prohibiting any form of use or republication of the material. According to his statement, he has already taken the necessary action with the relevant authorities, with the aim of identifying and prosecuting those responsible.
The case highlights the growing risks from the exploitation of deepfake technology against recognisable individuals, with the aim of misleading citizens through false investment proposals.
