Ten stab wounds in baby's back in Kypseli – possible sexual abuse of other children
Forensic doctor termed incident on Thasou Street "unprecedented". Three accused persons prosecuted for drug trafficking and failure to report a death.
Infant with ten wounds discovered hidden in apartment in Kypseli
More than ten stab wounds to the back were found by the forensic examiner on the body of an infant discovered hidden in an apartment on Thasou Street in Kypseli, according to Newsbeast. The findings contradict the account given by the 43-year-old Greek father, who claimed the infant died from natural causes.
Forensic doctor Grigóris Léon termed the case "an unprecedented incident in Greek history". Speaking to television station Action24, he explained: "If it is confirmed that it was indeed around 8 to 10 months old, a child of this age can barely walk, cannot react – and here we are talking about at least 10 stab wounds to the back of a little human who may have minimal reactions".
Three arrested, dual criminal prosecution
Three persons were found in the apartment: the 43-year-old Greek man, his 38-year-old German partner, and a 26-year-old Afghan. Criminal prosecution was brought against all three at the felony level for drug trafficking, as well as prosecution at the misdemeanour level for failure to report the discovery of a death.
Police investigations continue in order to determine the exact circumstances of death, the place and date of the infant's birth, as well as the location where the crime was committed.
The 43-year-old's claim and its contradiction
The 43-year-old reportedly told police that he did not proceed with burying the infant out of fear of discovery. "I did not have the strength to bury it, because I was afraid the matter would be revealed and social services would take my other children from me," he said according to police sources.
He also claimed that the infant was born in an Athens maternity hospital, but made a particularly bizarre claim: "The baby cried constantly and my wife was down. They switched it for us at the maternity hospital and gave us another one that was possessed, and as soon as it died our house became peaceful," he reportedly argued. He added that after death from natural causes he placed the body in the freezer, where it remained for a long period.
The findings from the forensic examination do not corroborate this account. Authorities believe that death did not result from natural causes, with the result that the possibility of criminal action is strengthened.
Forensic doctor: examination required for possible sexual abuse
Léon noted that there were other children in the apartment, whom he suggests may have been victims of sexual abuse. "A clinical forensic examination should be carried out on each child separately. We should see what injuries – old or recent – they bear, and especially in the disputed areas. We should also see if there are sexually transmitted diseases. Such diseases are essentially a way of confirming sexual abuse," he stated to Action24.
The forensic doctor also emphasised that the biological relationship of the accused persons to the infant should be confirmed. "We need to confirm both the paternity and maternity of this child, that is, we need to confirm that these two people who led to the child's death were also his biological parents," he said.
The focus of investigations now centres on the search for the perpetrator and the complete reconstruction of the events that led to the death of the infant.
