54 migrants rescued in Ierapetra, 35 found in Heraklion – 16-year-old people smuggler arrested
The Coast Guard rescued 54 foreign nationals south of Ierapetra and found 35 more in Heraklion, arresting a 16-year-old South Sudanese person as a people smuggler.

Hcg.gr is reporting a series of operations by the Coast Guard-Hellenic Coast Guard (CG-HCG) at multiple locations across the country, with major incidents including the rescue of dozens of foreign nationals in Crete and the arrest of a minor people smuggler.
Ierapetra: 54 people aboard a boat south of the city
In the early hours of the previous day, the Unified Search and Rescue Coordination Centre (UKSRC) informed the Ierapetra Port Authority of a vessel with foreign nationals in the maritime area south of the city. A CG-HCG patrol vessel located the boat and rescued 54 people — 53 men and one woman. All were disembarked at Ierapetra port and transported by bus to temporary accommodation in the settlement of "Kalógeroi". The Ierapetra Port Authority is conducting the preliminary investigation.
Heraklion: 35 men on "Psarí Foráda" beach — 16-year-old arrested as people smuggler
In the early hours of today, officers from the Kalon Limenon Port Authority and the Special Missions Unit (SMU) of the Central Heraklion Port Authority found 35 foreign nationals on "Psarí Foráda" beach. The migrants were transported to Heraklion port and are to be transferred to a Reception Centre inland.
As part of the preliminary investigation, the Central Heraklion Port Authority arrested a 16-year-old South Sudanese national, who was identified as the people smuggler for the group. He faces charges for illegal entry into the country, facilitation and exposure, in accordance with Articles 83 of Law 3386/2005, 25 of Law 5038/2023 and 306 of the Penal Code. According to statements from the foreign nationals, they departed from Tobruk's shores in Libya on 9 May 2025, paying amounts of between 150,000 and 160,000 Egyptian pounds and 14,000 Libyan dinars for their transport. The boat they used was destroyed.
Preveza: Suspected mine in the "Monolithi" maritime area
The Preveza Port Authority was informed of the discovery of ordnance — possibly a mine — in the "Monolithi" maritime area of Preveza county. The object is in the sea, approximately one metre from the shore. The Port Authority marked the area and informed the competent disposal service for further action.
Eleusis: Four arrested after incident at port gate
In the early hours of the previous day, officers from the Central Eleusis Port Authority arrested four people — three men aged 25, 27 and 32 and a 17-year-old — for violations involving violence against staff, disobedience, threats and insults. The incidents occurred during a police check on Kanellopoulos Street, in front of a gate to a private facility within the Dry Zone of the Port. An additional violation of military service legislation was found for the 27-year-old. The three adults were brought before the Prosecutor of the Court of First Instance of Athens in flagrante delicto proceedings, whilst the 17-year-old was released on the orders of the Prosecutor of Criminal Prosecution of Minors in Athens.
Chania: 76-year-old woman found dead on Chrysi Akti beach
In the early hours of today, the Chania Port Authority was informed of the recovery of an unconscious 76-year-old Greek national from the maritime area of Chrysi Akti beach in Chania Municipality. An ambulance from EKAB transported her to Chania General Hospital, where her death was confirmed. The First Port Division of Chania ordered an autopsy-necropsy from the Forensic Medicine Service of Crete.
Messolonghi: 76-year-old fell with motorcycle in port
In the afternoon hours of today, a 76-year-old Greek rider fell with a motorcycle in the maritime area of Messolonghi port. He was transported by EKAB ambulance to Messolonghi General Hospital, where his death was confirmed. The Messolonghi Port Authority is conducting a preliminary investigation and ordered an autopsy-necropsy from the Forensic Medicine Service of Patras.
