During today's session at the Mixed Jury Court of Heraklion, the 44-year-old man accused of the death of 3-year-old Angelos presented his account of events. The former partner of the boy's mother alleged that she had abused the child.
According to what he told the judges, he met the 26-year-old woman through Facebook. The woman had told him that she was not doing well in Athens and had a son. He suggested that they move to Crete to avoid problems.
The man claimed that he suspected the mother was beating the child, but never saw anything like that happening in front of him. He also stated that he had recorded the boy on his mobile phone with bruises and had warned the woman that he would report her to the authorities. As he said, she threatened him that she would accuse him of sexual abuse.
Regarding the injuries found on the child's body, the accused man gave alternative explanations. He maintained that on one occasion the boy had wet his hands in a bucket and the mother became irritated. On another occasion, the child slipped in the toilet and hit himself.
The 26-year-old, in her testimony on Friday, had alleged that the 44-year-old had submerged the child in the bath. He denies this account.
The accused man categorically denied that he had used violence against the 3-year-old. "I did not hit him, I never hit my child," he said, adding that when he saw photographs of the boy's injuries, he was shocked.
After the completion of his defence, the proceedings are drawing to a close. The prosecution's submission will follow, along with the arguments of the lawyers and the court's verdict.
