Ten people are facing criminal prosecution for the illegal disposal of demolition and construction waste in rural areas of Koufallia in Thessaloniki and Athyra in Pella, according to information from Naftemporiki.
During recent inspections, police officers identified illegal and uncontrolled dumping of rubble in areas of central Macedonia. Five suspects were arrested during the operation, whilst the involvement of a further five people emerged. The accused are men aged between 40 and 77 years old who acted as truck drivers, site managers, foremen, land managers or owners, consultants, company representatives and company owners.
During the last twenty days, the perpetrators allegedly transported and illegally dumped 56 loads of mixed solid waste without obtaining the required environmental licence. Their motive was financial profit from avoiding lawful disposal fees.
The impact on the area is significant. The illegal dumping caused pollution, alteration and degradation of the environment. Additionally, the morphology of the soil was altered, the bed of the stream was damaged and the ecological balance in both areas was disrupted.
The detainees are being brought before judicial authorities.
