Murder of 25-year-old Penelope in Igoumenitsa: 27-year-old confessed after three hours
The 25-year-old was found dead on a cycle path in Igoumenitsa with 10 stab wounds. Her ex-partner confessed after attempting to mislead authorities.
Confession in the murder of Penelope in Igoumenitsa
A 27-year-old was arrested and confessed to the murder of his 25-year-old ex-partner Penelope, who was found dead on the evening of Sunday, 20 September on a cycle path in Igoumenitsa, according to Newsbeast.
The forensic examination recorded 10 stab wounds in various parts of the 25-year-old's body. Specifically, two deep wounds were found in the neck area, as well as wounds to the back, chest, abdomen and leg. A defensive wound was discovered on her left hand.
The meeting and the crime
The 27-year-old, who had separated from Penelope approximately one month before the murder, travelled from Athens to Igoumenitsa to meet her. He initially claimed that the meeting concerned financial disputes between them. Authorities are investigating whether the attack was premeditated, given that the 27-year-old is reported to have had a knife with him.
The knife used in the murder was found by authorities at a location in the area — it is believed the perpetrator threw it as he was leaving.
The attack scenario — mimicking Angnostopoulos
At 21:44 the 27-year-old telephoned police, five minutes after authorities had already been informed of a young woman unconscious at the location. He claimed that both of them had been attacked by unknown assailants.
"Two people stabbed us with knives, four unknown individuals," he is reported to have told police officers.
Newsbeast reports that the 27-year-old attempted to mimic the strategy of Babis Angnostopoulos, who had presented himself as gagged after he had already killed his wife Caroline. According to investigative evidence, the wounds the 27-year-old bore are reported to have been inflicted by himself, in order to strengthen the attack scenario.
Police officers who arrived at the location found him wounded and initially transferred him to Igoumenitsa Emergency Care Unit and then to Filiadon General Hospital, where he is being held under guard.
Three hours of interrogation — confession
During questioning at the hospital, the 27-year-old's answers showed contradictions. After approximately three hours of questions, he is reported to have confessed that he killed his ex-partner. Authorities are now examining all the evidence and in particular what preceded the meeting of the two.
Testimonies and profile of the victim
The 25-year-old's landlady described the couple's relationship to MEGA without having observed any tensions.
"Special, very good, and he seemed quiet. We didn't hear them arguing or anything. But now in the end they split up," she said.
Penelope worked for a fish farming company in Igoumenitsa and was preparing to return to Athens for postgraduate studies. "Penelope was a very good girl. She was leaving us, going to Athens to continue her studies with a postgraduate degree," her employer said.
Tragic remains the situation of the 25-year-old's mother, who had lost her husband two years earlier and now found herself facing her daughter's death. The case has shocked the local community, whilst authorities continue their investigation for a full clarification of the murder circumstances.
