Murder of 65-year-old in Toumba: 46-year-old Albanian faces trial after 13 years

Thirteen years after the crime, a 46-year-old Albanian national is being brought before the defendant's dock for the murder of a 65-year-old in the Toumba district of Thessaloniki. According to thetoc.gr, the defendant was arrested in Serbia and extradited to Greece following a request for judicial cooperation.
Judicial sources report that the man was identified as one of the perpetrators and was referred by order to stand trial in a Mixed Jury Court for homicide and robbery committed jointly.
The crime of 27 February 2013
The crime was committed on 27 February 2013. According to the case file, the individuals involved were monitoring the victim's house for days before proceeding with the execution of their plan.
On the day of the attack, the perpetrators drove the 65-year-old to the basement of the apartment building, where they immobilised him, gagged him and tied him up. The unfortunate man succumbed to asphyxiation.
Subsequently, the perpetrators removed valuables and the victim's keys and entered the apartment, where his wife was present, removing a sum of money.
The role of the domestic helper and accomplices
From the evidence in the case file, it emerges that a woman who worked as a domestic helper in the victim's house revealed information to her husband about the 65-year-old's financial situation. Her husband, in turn, appears to have entrusted the physical perpetrators with carrying out the crime.
Four people have already been convicted irrevocably in the case: the domestic helper, her husband and two other foreigners. The domestic helper was sentenced to 11.5 years imprisonment, whilst the other three received life sentences, with additional multi-year sentences for each.
Arrest in Serbia and extradition to Greece
The 46-year-old defendant had fled after the crime and was eventually traced to Serbia. His extradition to Greece was carried out following a request for judicial cooperation, according to judicial sources cited by thetoc.gr.
