Neighbours reveal what happened on the night of the murder in Menidi

In the early hours of Monday, 12 October 2026, an 89-year-old woman was found dead in her bedroom in the detached house she shared with her son in Menidi. According to Newsit.gr, the testimonies of neighbours of the victim capture the scenes that unfolded that night and the conduct of the 62-year-old son following her death.

The 89-year-old woman's nephew discovered her dead around 02:00 and immediately called the authorities. Police forces who rushed to the scene found the woman bearing head injuries, bruising to the neck and face, as well as signs of struggle. The initial assessment by the coroner indicates that her death occurred on Sunday afternoon from asphyxiation — although both the son and nephew claimed she died in the early hours.

A neighbour who was called that night by the woman's son to ring an ambulance described to Newsit.gr what happened: "We heard voices during the night. I went out and he told me 'call 166, my mother is not well'. We asked him what had happened to his mother and he told us 'I don't know, I pushed her, I was holding her but she didn't understand'".

The same neighbour added that the 62-year-old had previously troubled the authorities: "They had some arguments earlier. I think he has been in prison."

Another neighbour reported that the police had visited the family home repeatedly, mainly for rows and drugs, as the victim's son was a drug user. She also noted that the 62-year-old suffers from vision problems stemming from an earlier traffic accident. A third neighbour claimed that the son took his mother's life, without providing further details.

The authorities brought in the 62-year-old son, who maintained a scenario of robbery by unknown persons. Both he and the 89-year-old's nephew are being held at the Western Attica Police Directorate and are giving statements. According to neighbours, the 62-year-old suffers from mental health problems and due to drug use has come into contact with the authorities many times.

The forensic examination has not yet been completed, whilst police investigations are ongoing to establish the motives and identify the person responsible.
