Murder of Vagias Nestor: New findings in authorities' investigation
The investigation into the fatal fire at the Nestor family residence in Thessaloniki is progressing with new evidence emerging from house searches.
Officers from the Counter-Terrorism Service, during searches at the 29-year-old's home, discovered a piece of paper with a sketch depicting the road to the city's Traffic Police headquarters. Officials are investigating whether this indicates a plan for a future attack against that specific police department.
At the same time, an umbrella was found that appears to play a crucial role. Testimony from neighbourhood residents reports that the couple — the 29-year-old man and the 26-year-old woman — used this object to cover their faces from security cameras whilst surveilling the Nestor family home. Investigators are now examining whether the same individual is involved in previous fires in the city, including an attack against a member of parliament in June 2025, where the attackers had also concealed their features behind an umbrella.
Significant importance is also being placed on electronic traces. The 29-year-old attempted to throw his mobile phone from the balcony when police knocked on the door, however the device was not destroyed and was seized. The digital data is expected to be analysed by forensic laboratories.
The investigation file is now at the stage of main inquiry. The results of laboratory analyses could shed light not only on those responsible for two further arson attacks, but also on the person who gave the orders. Interest is turning towards a member of the "Anarchist Action" organisation, to which the 26-year-old had been connected in an earlier case.
