New details about the arson attack on an apartment building in Thessaloniki have come to light as the three arrested individuals appear at the Court of Appeal to give their statements.
The 29-year-old man and the 26-year-old woman, who are suspected of having placed the incendiary device, decided to use an open umbrella during their route from the apartment-hideout to the target house. They did this in order to conceal their faces from possible security cameras.
This particular method had previously been used by the leader of the group "Anarchist Action Team" in 2022, when 28 arson attacks were carried out. At that time, the 26-year-old was arrested and convicted to a prison sentence of 16 months with a suspended term. The open umbrella became the common element that linked the two cases in the hands of the prosecuting authorities.
However, the perpetrators' attempt at concealment failed due to a mistake. Directly opposite the entrance of the hideout operates a medical clinic with dark-tinted glass, within which there is a surveillance camera. From there, both the exit and the return of the couple to the apartment after the attack were clearly recorded.
Furthermore, the two suspects, in an attempt to check whether there was a camera in the clinic, pressed their faces against the glass. This action gave the police clear photographs of their facial features.
After their return to the hideout, they remained there until 5:30-6:00 in the afternoon of the next day. When they left, they had changed clothes, transporting the clothing worn during the attack in a white rucksack. During the house searches that followed the arrest, parts of this clothing were found.
